I miss NY! So much so that even after 4 years of staying away from it and having traveled and lived in 3 other continents, I have not changed the time in my laptop; it still shows NY time (EST). There’s something about that city that always keeps me attached to it.
NYC is amazing when it comes to food, esp. street food. Anyone that has been to NYC, should try the Chicken and rice vendor cart by the 56th street and 6th Ave. It has the most amazing halal chicken and rice. No wonder even at 2am there’s a long line for it. My craving for the mouth watering chicken and rice led me into making the following dish.

For the Chicken:
Chop 3-4 cloves of garlic and a bunch of coriander. Place the chopped garlic, coriander, one table spoon of extra virgin olive oil, salt, pepper and the juice of half a lemon in a blender. I used a mortar and pestle because it retains the freshness and earthiness of the food.
Ideally you would use halal chicken but in my case, Woolworth was my closest and easiest choice. Mix the above paste with the Chicken and put in the fridge.

For the rice:
In the mean time, take out a large pan with about 2 table spoons of olive oil. Add 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder, 1tsp of coriander powder and two cloves. After 10 seconds, add 2 cups of rice and stir. Once the masala is evenly distributed, take the masal out of the pan and add water, salt and pepper into a microwavable container. Let it cook for approximately 20 min in the microwave.

Take out the chicken from the fridge and pan fry it. Once its completely cooked and has a beautiful brown color on top, take out of the pan and let it cool before you shred it into small pieces.
For the Sauce:
The key to this dish is the sauce and when I was searching the web to identify the ingredients of this delicious sauce, I noticed that most of the people have to failed to do including NY Times and Huffington Post. So I tried to make my own sauce by mixing 2 table spoons of greek yogurt, 1 teaspoon of mayo ( don't put too much of it or else its going to become too sweet- I made that mistake), salt, pepper, garlic, some chopped coriander leaves and a couple drops of vinegar.
To serve, add the chicken on top of the rice and pour some of the white sauce and red hot sauce( Sriracha) and pile on some lettuce.
Enjoy NYC’s street food from the comfort of your home!
